Background
Alaska Environmental Resources (AER), LLC purchased Smoke School from HMH Consulting, LLC in October of 2012 to operate Visible Emission Evaluation (VEE) certification classes for regulators and permitted entities in Alaska.
AER-Control's VEE field trials satisfy certification requirements of 40 CFR 60 Appendix A, Method 9, Visible Determination of the Opacity of Emissions from Stationary Sources. AER conducts field trials in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Valdez, Kenai, Juneau, and Deadhorse every six months.
THE TEAM
Larry Taylor
Founder
AER Founder and part owner Larry Taylor, Jr. started reading smoke plumes in 1984. He is certified as a Qualified Environmental Professional by the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice and has been assisting in the operation of Smoke School since 1990, first with the Municipality of Anchorage Air Pollution Control Agency and then with HMH Consulting, LLC.
Larry often conducts field exams in Juneau or other special course offerings.
Ovidiu "Ovi" Popovici
Partner
Ovi Popovici is an electro-mechanical engineer and has been a partner in AER since 2013. He has run field certification exams for HMH Consulting and AER, and built all HMH and AER smoke generators except for the first HMH unit. In the Fall of 2016, Ovi took over as primary instructor for most field tests.
Shawna Popovici
Operations Manager
Shawna Popovici, Ovi’s wife, took over operations for AER in the spring of 2017. She has lived in Anchorage since 2005, but previously lived in several Alaska communities: Soldotna, Seward, Kodiak and the Juneau area.
